Why I only played ETF once

Postby Crass Spektakel on 07 May 2010, 09:37

I have been playing TF since... well.. since Netquake 1.06 and Teamfortress 1.24. And thats a very long time.

I liked Q3F and played it up to 2003 a lot.

I liked ETF too but only played it once.

And the reason was: It simply didn't run reliable. Even when there where Downloadlinks everywhere it was a pain to install, update and even if you did everything right it never let me join any server. After lots of hours tempering around, looking for help in IRC, forum and so on I simply quit and decided to play BF42 while waiting for TF2 and some Urban Terror sometimes, then BF2 while waiting for TF2 and some Padmans World sometimes...

Urban Terror and Padmans World, while technically pretty close to ETF, have always been a piece of cake to play: Download a ZIP, unzip, double click exe, play.

In ETF I only managed once to join a server and play some japan garden. And it was a blast!!! Too bad it was my only experience with ETF.

Hello there :)

Thanks for your feedback! Your post reads like you tried ETF a long time ago. If you ever wanna give it a try again, feel free to download the required files from http://kgaming.eu/index.php?p=etf_downloads_files and ask on our IRC channel #kgather @ QuakeNet for help, if you run into any problems. The ETF developers didn't provide us with a 1-click-installer, so it still can be a bit of a hassle to set things up, but I'm sure there are people on the channel (myself included) that are willing to help you out.

See you around,

IMHO ETF is way easier to make it works than Q3F and even classical Q1 based TF. :ugeek:

i just wonder why the open fortress port didn't catch on. and i don't seem to get any reply from ensiform to get the code (or he is just ignoring me :p)

a simple standalone ioQuake version, no need to apply patches and/or install a mod. In addition, it would preserve etf better than et which may eventually be not available anymore.

OP, I'm sorry you had problems installing the game and getting it to run. We tried to make it as straight forward as we could and as easy to install and get right into the action of playing on a server. We wanted to bundle it with ET during the 1.6 release but I believe it was Activision that would not allow us so we had to keep the installers separate from ET.

I do hope you try and play again as I do believe it is the best incarnation of Team Fortress to date.
